The History Behind International Women's Day

March 8 marks International Women's Day. 

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, political and innovation achievement of women - increasing the visibility of women's contribution while calling out inequality. 

HISTORY BEHIND INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

It started in 1908 where there was debate amongst women regarding their inequality and oppression. 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better salary and yes, voting rights. 

1909 marked the first Women's Day across the United States. 

1910, the first International conference for working women was held in Copenhagen. 

1911, International Women's day is celebrated for the first time in Austra, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. It was reported that in the Austro-Hungarian Empire alone, there were three hundred demonstrations. 

1913, Russia observed its first Women's Day on February 23. 

1914, International Women's Day was held on March 8 in Germany and was dedicated to women's right to vote, which later, was won the fight in 1918.

1917, women textile workers in Petrograd, Russia began a demonstration on March 8, covering the whole city. The women in Saint Petersburg went on strike on the same day for "Bread and Peace", demanding the end of World War 1 and the end of czarism. Seven days later, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated, and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.

1975 marked International Women's Day and celebrated for the first time by the United Nations.

Three colours are chosen to celebrate International Women's Day - Purple, Green and White. 

  • Purple - Justice and Dignity
  • Green - Hope
  • White - Purity

This year, the goal is to create a gender-equal world while celebrating women's success. 

This year's hashtag is #ChooseToChange and #IWD2021.

There is always a need to increase awareness of the inequality from gender biases as well as oppression. We should all play our part in bringing gender parity.
