Finally, KFC introduces a plant-based burger from Quorn February 9, 2021, in Malaysia, but, for a limited time only.
"In recent years, meat-free protein alternative has been gaining traction with more people opening up to alternative protein sources. This led to creating the ‘Zero Chicken’ concept — a chicken-less burger that tastes unmistakably and satisfyingly KFC! We are beyond excited for Malaysians to finally taste the Original Recipe KFC Zero Chicken Burger to believe it for themselves!” said Evelyn Ng, Deputy General Manager Marketing of KFC Malaysia.
The plant-based 'chicken' burger or rather the Zero Chicken Burger uses a mycoprotein based and is seasoned with KFC's classic 11 herbs and spices recipe. Besides, the burger will include cheese slices, mayonnaise, lettuce and BBQ sauce.
The plant-based patty claimed to be high in protein, fibre while low in saturated fat and zero cholesterol.
But the bad news is, it's neither vegan nor vegetarian because it is fried in the same oil as the chicken products. Apart from that, the mayonnaise and cheese are not vegan too.
This plant-based 'chicken burger is definitely not cheap, it is said to priced RM12.99 for an a la carte. But, if you feel like going meatless, it could be an option, a 'healthier' fast food for you?
This is not the first time KFC has roll out plant-based menu item. Previously, they have rolled out the same burger throughout KFC Singapore and also plant-based chicken sandwich in various part of the US.
The global plant-based meat market is set to reach over USD35 billion by 2027 compared to USD11.1 billion in 2019. The main factor that will drive the trend is health concerns due to the upsurge in food-borne illnesses in animal meat, awareness of food safety and nutrition.
