The late James Doohan, aka "Scotty", in his role as Chief Engineer in Star Trek, once saved the life of one suicidal fan.
James Doohan would have turned 100 this month, and to remember him, we would like to highlight how everyone, especially celebrities, can positively impact one's life.
James' interaction with a fan, which he claimed: "the best thing I have ever done in my life". It all started when he received a letter from a Star Trek fan who wrote to him about how she was in a bad place and thinking about suicide.
He quickly acted upon this. He called her and said, "Hey, this is Jimmy Doohan. Scotty of Star Trek. I'm doing a convention in Indianapolis, and I want to see you there."
When he saw her, he immediately knew she was suicidal. He knew that somebody had to help her.
James approached her and told her about the surrounding conventions around the area. He said to her that he wants to see her at each convention.
That went on for two or three years, about 18 times.
"All I did was talk positive things to her. And then, all of a sudden - nothing. I didn't hear anything, and I had no ideas what was really happening to her because I never really saved her address," said James.
Eight years later, James finally got a letter saying, "I do want to thank you so much for what you did for me. I just got my master's degree in electronic engineering."
In addition to his acting, James Doohan was also known for being a World War II veteran wounded in combat. James Doohan was a hero both on and off the screen.
Scotty, you certainly beam us up.
