North Korea said it would sever diplomatic relations with Malaysia after the Malaysian court ruled that a North Korean man could be extradited to the United States to face money laundering charges, reported KCNA today.
The Malaysian authority has committed an unpardonable crime of forcibly delivering the innocent citizen of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) to the United States by having charged him with "criminal", added the report.
Malaysia's actions had destroyed "the entire foundation of the bilateral relations based on the respect for sovereignty," it said.
From this very moment, the Malaysian authority will bear full responsibility for all the consequences to be incurred between the two countries.
North Korea's foreign affairs ministry also warned Washington that it would "pay a price".
On March 9, Malaysia's top court ruled that a North Korean man, Mun Chol Myong, could be extradited to the United States to face money laundering charges, according to media reports.
The entire incident, which has spanned over 670 days since the arrest of Mun in 2019. Mun has been accused by the United States of laundering funds through front companies and issuing fraudulent documents to support illicit shipments to North Korea.
Mun fought the extradition request claiming that it was politically motivated by the US.
