Sarawak: Rewards For Paralympian Powerlifters Who Brought Home Medals

Both Sarawakian Powerlifters, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin and Jong Yee Khie, received financial incentives from the Sarawak government for their achievements at the recent 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Bonnie received RM500,000 for winning the gold medal in the men's 72kg category, while Jong received RM300,000 for winning the silver medal in the men's 107kg category.

Bonnie, a Serian born Sarawakian, nailed a 225kg bench press at the second attempt and deadlift 228kg, successfully breaking the Paralympic record held by Iranian Rasool Mohsin by 1kg.

Jong Yee Khie, from Batu Kawa, lifted 237kg in his second attempt and won him the silver behind Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar of Mongolia.

"I hope the incentives will be a source of encouragement for other athletes to aim higher in the future," said Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg, Sarawak Chief Minister.

"Don't be content with being 'jaguh kampung' but to win honours at international championships," he added.

Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak and Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Community and Family, were also present at the ceremony.
