While we may view kindness as a small and unnoteworthy act, it can be so much more. Each small act of kindness creates a ripple effect. Imagine if we all did one small act of kindness each day?
Hailey Ford. At the age of 6, Hailey started a garden to grow food for the homeless around her neighbourhood in Kitsap, Washington, USA.
The idea started when Hailey met Billy Ray, a homeless man who had not eaten for four days.
Hailey chatted with Billy Ray and found out that he was a veteran who lost his leg during the war. He couldn't find a job to support himself, so he was left homeless.
Hailey was only five at that time, and she had begged her mother to buy Billy Ray a sandwich.
Touched by her daughter's kindness, her mum agreed.
Since then, Hailey started helping more homeless people by providing them with free food and clothes.
After a few days, Hailey's mother needed to stop little Hailey as they are not from a wealthy family and can't afford to support all of the homeless.
Hearing that, Hailey was sad and came upon the idea of growing her vegetables!
Hailey's parents were doubtful at first but supported her decision.
Hailey, six at that time, has no experience with any farming. After finishing her homework every day, she will learn about planting and farming through books. She will consult her grandfather if there's anything she didn't understand. Her grandfather taught her how to grow a vegetable garden in a narrow land.
After few months of hard work, Hailey finally harvested the first batch of carrots, potatoes and soybeans. She donated all the harvest to the homeless.
Since then, she has been harvesting more, including blueberries, peas, tomatoes and okra!
Hailey's big heart has moved many hearts of the people in her neighbourhood. Her neighbours begun to help her in her vegetable-planting operation and allowed her to use part of their yard.
With the community behind her, her vegetable garden has grown bigger, almost all over the neighbourhood!
Hailey will wash and pack the fruits and vegetables and distribute them to the homeless at regular intervals.
The homeless, in return, help Hailey in managing the garden when she's in school. They don't have to worry about being hungry and can grow their food.
It didn't stop there. Hailey began to find another problem. The homeless were still sleeping on the streets. She thought of an idea to build them a house!
She then immediately found wooden pallets and started working on them. Hailey went to the building material market with her family to get more material. The store owner decided to sell the material at half-price upon knowing Hailey's intention.
Hailey researched how to build a simple and eco-friendly place. She decided to use denim as a wallboard coating, keeping the house warm, especially on cold days.
The neighbourhood community was very supportive as well. They provided as many construction materials and denim as possible.
Hailey learned how to drill, hammer, paint etc. The tiny house looks warm, tidy and even luxurious!
After completing the house, neighbours and strangers came and helped her lift her house to where it was needed.
Hailey has built 11 wooden houses, and everyone in the community comes to help her. "If you really want to do something, the universe will help you."
Hailey has a slogan: "I can't help everyone, but love can!"
With love, wisdom, and courage, she has made "achievements" that many adults cannot. Over time, more and more people are realizing: "Love is truly something extraordinary."
Hailey Ford continues to contribute to the community with her garden harvest, raising funds to buy clothes and inspiring the whole world.
