Sarawak: Renowned Sape Player Gone Too Soon

A renowned Sarawak Sape player, Saufi Aiman Yahya was found dead in his office at City Square, Pending on Thursday, June 10 around 9 pm. 

He was only 31 years of age. 

Saufi Aiman Yahya was found lifeless on the floor inside his office, reported by the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA).

The cause of death is yet to be disclosed, pending the post-mortem by the Sarawak General Hospital and the police report. 

Saufi Aiman Yahya was the Managing Director of Sape'Star and Chairman for the Persatuan Anak Seni Sape' Kuching.

He was a Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) arts graduate and started to learn playing the sape by himself in 2011. He started playing contemporary tunes to showcase the sape's versatility. He later picked up the sape's traditional nuances and stories from master players in Ulu Baram and Belaga, before developing his own unique playing style.

Saufi also co-wrote Alat Muzik Tradisional Sarawak: Sape with academicians Connie Lim Keh Nie and Narawi Rashidi, an academic/field research book that features the history and making of the sape instrument.

He had won four gold medals and one silver at the 21st Annual World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in California in 2017.
