Gout is a form of arthritis caused by excessive uric acid in the body. Uric acid is a part of your body waste formed by purine proteins. It is easily disposed of by urine. But when this uric acid can’t be disposed off naturally, crystals or 'tophi' will accumulate in the joints area. This is when body parts like the ankle, knees, toe or wrist would get inflamed and swollen. The whole experiences are painful and can affect one’s daily activities.
However, people with high uric acid can control or prevent these gout attacks. Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has posted a simple guide to avoid gout attacks by consuming everyday foods. The guide listed:

Pineapple contains both enzymes and vitamins that help to reduce inflammation in the affected joints area. Bromelain enzyme is known to be anti-inflammatory and use to treat arthritis symptoms. Pineapple has a high vitamin C content, 131% of the recommended dietary intake and can reduce one’s uric acid levels. The fibre found in pineapple also reduce inflammation, and since pineapple is plant-based, they are low in purine and help patients avoid gout attacks.
Pineapple has to be eaten fresh or juice up. Avoid sweetening the pineapple, as a sugary diet could also lead to gout attacks. The serving size of pineapple per day is approximate one cup of the fruit.
Turmeric contains curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory and also used to treat arthritis-related diseases. The substance is also antioxidant, which decreased levels of uric acid. Studies suggest that curcumin may also act as a pain relief for the affected joints area.
Turmeric is used for cooking, especially in curry. Suitable consumption for turmeric is around 500 - 1,000mg per day. However, food cooked with turmeric only contains approximately 3% of curcumin. Supplements are needed to reach the targeted curcumin. The daily intake of curcumin depends on the intended use, and do consult with the doctor first before consuming any curcumin supplement.
Chillies have a high content of capsaicin, the substance that makes the chilli spicy. Capsaicin is known to reduce inflammatory and repair damaged joints. One chilli also contains 65 mg of vitamin C that benefits in lowering uric acid and reduce inflammatory.
Using chillies can be consumed directly or treated topically for gout treatment. By rubbing chillies mixture at the affected gout area, the capsaicin will numb and reduce the pain. Do be careful when applying the chillies because the chilli mixture's accidental application to other parts of the body can cause discomfort and irritation.
Ginger has been used for medicinal purpose for ages, including treating arthritis-related conditions. This root plant contains gingerols and shogaols, the two substance known to be anti-inflammation. Ginger also reduces the uric acid level and soothes muscle pain caused by inflammation.
Ginger can be used in cooking or brewed as a tea. You could slice a small piece of ginger and put it inside the mouth. The ginger slice acts as a natural painkiller. The ginger paste can be used topically. Simply blend ginger and oil, then rubbed into gout affected area to relieve the pain.
Lemons are rich in vitamin C, which help to reduce uric acid. One lemon fruit contains approximately 35 mg of vitamin C. Lemon is also acidic, but it became alkaline when it metabolised inside the body, thus balancing the uric acid level.
A common way to consume lemon is by mixing the fruit with beverages. Freshly squeeze one or two lemons into the drink of choices, such as tea. Avoid adding too much sugar into the beverage, as too much sugar can also lead to gout.
