Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the discovery of 13 ancient coffins in Saqqara, Giza. The wooden coffins believed to be 2,500 years old and surprisingly are in good condition with its occupants still sealed in. Even after two millennia, the colours painted on the coffin is still intact.
Minister Khaled Al-Anani, explained that the ancient coffins were discovered in an 11 metres deep burial shaft. Apart from the coffins, they also discover three sealed niches and believed that there are more coffins still yet be uncovered.
At the moment, not much information is known about these coffins nor its occupants. But in a few days matter, the overall total of the coffins, including its occupant’s identities and ranks will be known as the excavation is still going on.
Saqqara, a desert necropolis is archaeologist heaven. This place used to be the capital of ancient Egypt. And for 3,000 years, ancient Egyptians buried their dead together with their belongings here. This makes Saqqara a target for tomb raiders. With this recent discovery, especially with the coffins is still sealed, one can imagine the mysteries and treasures of ancient Egypt they can find inside.
